Called on the Month of Elul
-"This is not “self-improvement work,” this is about accepting the possibility that there might not be anything wrong with us." -
These words by Dori Midnight that I came across on her website touched me at the beginning of this season of Elul dedicated to a process of soul searching in preparation for the new year.
Perhaps her words sound dangerous, encouraging of living without consequences. Moral hazard as the phrase goes. Perhaps.
Still, Elul demands it anyway. We do not appear before the Sovereign Creator of the universe on condition that we have successfully rectified ourselves and paid in full what we owe the world. We appear because we are called. We are called because the Sovereign deems us worthy as we are made. Who are we to argue with the One who Spoke and Brought the World into Being?
